Granby Rovers Decision on Age Changes

March 7, 2016

Dear Parents, Coaches and Team Management:

The Granby Rovers Board met on Wednesday, February 3rd.  The primary focus of this meeting was to discuss the age changes that will be implemented by US Youth Soccer and the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association (CJSA) in the fall of 2016.  This is one of three changes that will be taking effect over the next two years.  The three changes being implemented are:

  1. Formation of team by birth year (meaning the year the team plays in is based on the year the oldest player(s) were born)
  2. Number of players on the field at each level
  3. Standardization of field and goal sizes

Please see these links for more information:

The Rovers Board endeavors to align with the birth year requirement from US Youth Soccer and CJSA as well as accomplish our mission to develop youth players for the high school program.  The Board spent a great deal of time discussing many options for complying with the required age change, thinking about what is best for  players, teams, and the Rovers Soccer Club.  We were objective rather than subjective and used case studies to discuss the various options available to the club.  The outcome of this difficult process was a decision to move forward with the structure laid out below, beginning with the fall 2016 assessment process:

U9 & U10

  • Teams will be formed after the assessment process.
  • Any child with a birth year of 2008 will be trying out for the U9 team.
  • Any child with a birth year of 2007 will be trying out for the U10 team
  • If a player is born in 2006 but will be in fourth grade in the fall of 2016, they will be trying out for the U11 team (under the prior system, such a child would have been placed with the other fourth graders on the U10 team if they were born 8/1/06 or later).
  • School grade will not be a factor in team formation in these age groupings starting with the fall of 2016.  Children with birthdays in 2007, 2008 and later will play with their birth year.

U11, U12, U13, U14

  • Teams will be formed after the assessment process which will be grade based, with the exception of players falling into the 4th grade/born in 2006 scenario mentioned above.
  • Team formation will largely remain based on grade plus/minus players new to the organization/leaving the organization.  For example, a 6th grade team with players born in 2004 and 2005 will have to enter as a 2004 birth year team as players can always play up (2005 players).
  • If a team consists of players born in two different birth years, the team will need to enter league and Connecticut Cup play at a level to accommodate the oldest player(s).  Note that friendly games, with the agreement of the respective coaches, can be played with a mix of birth years.
  • During the assessment process, a scenario could exist where all players that are placed on a given team will have the same birth year and the team will play at the correct birth year level.
  • Granby Rovers might have multiple teams at some age brackets and none at other brackets during this transition period
  • There was a feeling that playing against slightly older competition would be generally beneficial for our stronger players and teams, but could be less beneficial for our weaker players and teams.  We will therefore be sensitive to this dynamic as we work through the team formation process.
  • The assessment process, as has always been the case, will be carried out by a group of independent assessors and the Girls/Boys Directors will tabulate the results.  The President and Vice President will also provide input.
  • Many things change from year to year with families moving in and out of town and also as our children make choices about continuing to play soccer at the Travel level.  This means the team formations could be adjusted slightly going forward based on the annual registration differences.

  • We will continue to “grandfather” the grade based approach to team formation for the players that will be U11 and up in the fall of 2016.  That is, for the fall of 2017, we will have birth year teams at U9 through U11 and grade based teams for U12 through U14; for the Fall of 2018, we will have birth year teams at U9 through U12 and grade based teams for U13 and U14; and so forth until we have transitioned fully to birth year teams at all levels.
  • Note that eighth grade teams will almost always be a mix of two birth years (this has always been true) and CJSA accommodates this by designating the league and Cup competitions as “U14/U15”.

If you should have any questions, please contact any of the following Board Members:

Todd Klein, President ( ), Jim Wickham, Vice President ( ), Heather Coxon, Girls Director ( ), or Jeff Dixon, Boys Director ( )

Sincerely and on behalf of the entire Granby Rovers Board,

Todd Klein
